I almost called in sick.

It was a Sunday night. I was supposed to start my shift at 11 PM, and I was already dreading it. I worked the overnight desk at a hotel downtown. It was a quiet gig most of the time, but Sundays were the worst. Everyone checked out by noon, the late check-ins trickled in by evening, and by the time I got there, the place was a ghost town. But I needed the money. So I dragged myself in, clocked in at 11, and settled into the chair behind the front desk. The lobby was empty. The parking lot was empty. The night auditor had already done his thing. I had nothing to do until the early morning breakfast crowd started showing up.
