I almost called in sick.

It was a Sunday night. I was supposed to start my shift at 11 PM, and I was already dreading it. I worked the overnight desk at a hotel downtown. It was a quiet gig most of the time, but Sundays were the worst. Everyone checked out by noon, the late check-ins trickled in by evening, and by the time I got there, the place was a ghost town. Seven hours of sitting behind a desk, watching security cameras, and trying to stay awake.

But I needed the money. So I dragged myself in, clocked in at 11, and settled into the chair behind the front desk. The lobby was empty. The parking lot was empty. The night auditor had already done his thing. I had nothing to do until the early morning breakfast crowd started showing up.

I pulled out my phone. Against the rules, technically, but nobody was around to care. I scrolled through social media for a while. Watched some videos. Checked the news. Nothing held my attention. I was tired but not sleepy, which is a dangerous combination when you have seven hours to kill.

I opened a browser and typed in a casino site I’d seen a friend using a few weeks back. He’d mentioned it at a barbecue, something about fast withdrawals and a clean interface. I’d made a mental note but never followed up. Now seemed like as good a time as any.

I clicked through to the main page and looked around for a minute. The design was simple. No flashing banners, no loud music. Just games arranged in categories. I found the button to register at Vavada and started filling out the form. Email, password, basic details. Took maybe two minutes. Then I was in.

I didn’t deposit right away. I spent about twenty minutes just watching demo modes. Slots with different themes, blackjack, roulette, poker variations I’d never heard of. I was killing time, nothing more. But the more I watched, the more I wanted to actually play.

I checked my bank account. I had forty-seven dollars in my checking account that wasn’t allocated for bills. Money I usually used for coffee and lunches during the week. I told myself I’d deposit twenty. Enough to play for a while, not enough to hurt if I lost it.

I deposited twenty dollars and started looking for something to play.

I’m not a slots guy usually. Too much luck, not enough skill. But I was tired and the idea of making decisions in blackjack felt like more effort than I wanted to put in. I found a slot game with a space theme. Astronauts, planets, that sort of thing. It looked mindless. Perfect.

I set the bet to fifty cents and started spinning.

For the first ten minutes, nothing happened. I’d win a dollar here, lose a dollar there. My balance hovered around eighteen or nineteen dollars. I wasn’t paying close attention. I was watching the lobby cameras out of the corner of my eye, making sure nobody was coming in.

Then I hit a bonus round.

The screen changed. The music shifted. I was suddenly in some kind of spaceship, picking from different planets. Each planet had a prize. I tapped one. Fifty dollars. I tapped another. Twenty dollars. I tapped a third. One hundred dollars.

My balance jumped from nineteen dollars to nearly two hundred in about thirty seconds.

I sat up straighter in my chair. Looked around the lobby. Still empty. I looked back at my phone. The bonus round was still going. More planets. I tapped another. Seventy-five dollars. Another. Forty dollars. Another. Two hundred dollars.

By the time the bonus round ended, my balance was sitting at four hundred and sixty dollars.

I stared at it for a long time. The security cameras showed the same empty lobby. The clock on the wall said 2:14 AM. I had been playing for maybe forty minutes. I had turned twenty dollars into four hundred and sixty.

I cashed out immediately. No hesitation. I watched the withdrawal confirmation appear and then I closed the browser and put my phone face down on the desk.

The rest of my shift went by in a blur. I answered two phone calls. Checked in one late guest. Watched the sun come up over the parking lot. When my relief showed up at 7 AM, I clocked out and drove home in a daze.

The money hit my account three days later. I used it to pay for a certification course I’d been putting off for months. The one that would help me get off the overnight shift and into a better position. A month later, I finished the course. Two months after that, I got a promotion to day shift.

I still think about that Sunday night sometimes. The empty lobby. The space-themed slot game. The way my balance jumped so fast I almost didn’t believe it. I hadn’t even planned to register at Vavada that night. I was just bored. Just killing time. Just looking for something to do while the world slept around me.

Now I work normal hours. I see my friends more. I don’t spend my nights watching security cameras and drinking bad coffee. And every once in a while, when I have some downtime, I’ll log in and play a few spins. Nothing serious. Just a reminder of the night when being bored at work turned into something I still benefit from.

The promotion was the real win. The certification was the real win. But none of it would have happened without that bonus round. Without picking the right planet at the right time. Without being bored enough to click that register button in the first place.
